Pigs are delicious. So much so that I've decided to abandon my plan to fly out to Portland, Oregon, and drive instead...and rising oil be damned! Beginning on the Atlantic coast in Wilmington, North Carolina, I intend to cross the great barbecue belt that crosses this land, sampling the sizzling and savory goodness that is pork every chance I get, to cast a loving and inquisitive eye on the varying facets of this most lovely of culinary gems. Damn, that's like some serious semi-pro prose there. I'm gonna need an agent!
On a personal note, this move to Portland is more than a vacation. I plan on staying through the Fall, and so spent some time packing up my gear for a longish stay. I began by dividing my stuff into various piles. Extension cord...electronics pile. Spiral notebook...office pile. Lime-green thong...underpants pile. So far, so good. Then I started coming across items that I wanted to bring but was hard-pressed to defend. My snorkeling gear, or the squeegee I use for screenprinting. I could certainly live without them, but they represent my goals and desires. So I decided to start an "aspirations" pile of things I hope to need. It was about that time I picked up the black leather belt I've owned for many years. Older notches, representing a slimmer, trimmer Andrew. More recent notches, and deeper grooves as the buckle bit deeper, straining to earn its keep. Finally, the shame of abandonment.
I put it in the aspirations pile. This is no time for restraint!
The voyage begins...
